1966 Oldsmobile Toronado

1966 Oldsmobile Toronado

Oldsmobile Toronado it’s a personal luxury car produced by Oldsmobile from 1966 to 1992. Personal luxury cars had debuted earlier that decade and we’re becoming very popular (Ford Thunderbird, Studebaker Avanti, Buick Riviera) Oldsmobile wanted one of their own to get customers into their showroom, and in 1966. the Toronado debuted. It was an engineering marvel 425 cubic inch Super Rocket V8 engine which produced 385 horsepower, torsion bar suspension, special tires engineered specifically for the car by Firestone. Slot machine style speedometer and a completely flat floor. Perhaps the most amazing feature of the car was that it was front wheel drive meaning the cars drive wheels are the front wheels and the car was pulled from the front rather than pushed from behind. The Oldsmobile Toronado was the first American production car with front wheel drive since the 1937 Chord the Toronado was also the 100 millionth GM car built on March 16, 1966.

In 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado was Motor Trends car of the year and we came in third place in the European car of the year awards. First year of sales were 40,963 they are somewhat rare today but still make people stop and gaze just like they did in 1966. We are proud to have this car as part of our permanent collection.
